Advanced International Scuba Diver

Advanced International certification requires that each applicant perform to the instructor's satisfaction, knowledge or skill with the following:

1. Knowledge - General
1a. Physics (Gas laws - Boyles, Charlies, Henry's, Dalton's; Properties of water - refraction, thermoclines, density, color loss, sound travel)

1b. Decompression (Haldane's law, Meyer-Overton hypothesis, cold water effects, work effects, altitude effects; flying after diving; use of several dive tables; safety margins; use of decompression meter; time and depth limits)

1c. Dangerous Marine Life (identification, first aid, injury prevention)

1d. Dive Fitness (frequency of diving, pool exercises, personal limitations, common student medical dangers)

2. Knowledge - Equipment

2a.Regulator (balanced, unbalanced; 1st & 2nd stages; alternate air source; Air two

2b. Tanks (sizes, steel versus aluminum, visual inspection, hydrostatic testing)

2c. Gauges (tank pressure, depth, watch gauges, decompression)

2d. Buoyancy Compensator (auto inflation systems, replacing hoses, patching holes)

2e. Masks (types of masks, purge valves, de-fogging, straps)

2f. Find (propulsion techniques, full foot fins, open-heel fins, booties)

2g. Body Protection Suits (types of wet or dry suits, thickness designations, zippers, hypothermia concerns)


3. Water Skills
3a. Surface swimming using BC/tank as flotation device

3b. Gear on and off in water

3c. Weight belt on and off in water

3d. Advanced navigation techniques (triangles, compass use, natural aids)

3e. Exchange and clear masks underwater with another diver

4. Troubleshooting Skills
4a. Cramp removal on surface and underwater

4b. Free flowing regulator underwater

4c. Broken mask strap underwater

4d. Broken fin strap underwater

4e. Diver is lost

4f. Lost diver overnight

4g. Basic first aid for marine life bites and stings underwater and on surface

4h. Broken regulator underwater

4i. Buoyancy compensator inflator stuck

4j. Buoyancy compensator leaking air

4k. Loss of flashlight on night dive

4l. Lost exit point on night dive

5. Experience 
Proof of 150 logged dives including:
5a. three (3) night dives

5b. ten (10) deeper dives (over 60 feet but under 130 feet)

5c. five (5) beach dives with surf entry and exit
